Tragedy and HIPAA

HIPAA is a federal law that was meant to protect everyone's private medical information, but as tragedies such as the recent mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando have demonstrated, it also makes it difficult for concerned families to find any information about their loved ones during a crisis. In many cases, the confusion results from the healthcare practioners not being properly educated about the law, unnecessarily delaying contact with family. In this episode we discuss if there might be a way to update the healthcare industry about what they can and cannot say about patients during a crisis.
